Purpose: The present study is the first clinical randomized controlled assay with hyaluronic acid (HA) registered in Europe to show efficacy and safety of PRGF for the treatment of skin ageing.

Methods: A total of 100 patients of different phototypes (I-IV) and ages (31 -65 y.o.) were recruited for the assay. Randomized patients were treated intradermically with either HA or PRGF. HA was used once every month while
PRGF was applied once every two weeks for a total of 3 sessions of each treatment. Two follow up visits were scheduled for each patient group at 3 and 6 months post-treatment. Patient satisfaction was assessed by means of “Liquert scale”. Corneometry and patient satisfaction were two of the variables measured at each treatment session and on the 3 and 6 months follow up visits

Results: Corneometry measurements showed a significant improvement in skin hydration at both 3 and 6 moths. Furthermore, the effect of PRGF at 6 months remained 11% higher than initial measurement before treatment while only 3 % improvement was observed after HA treatment. The number of very satisfied patients was 73% higher in the group treated with PRGF.

Conclusions: Patients treated with PRGF showed higher skin hydration and referred higher levels of satisfaction than those treated with HA. These effects were already observed during the first month of treatment.
